Our volunteer network is invaluable to us and allows us to provide the support we offer to bereaved families, without our volunteers, we simply could not do what we do.

Mental Health Nurse
I wanted to volunteer for bereaved children because after I lost my dad to cancer aged 10, I felt lost in the world and didn’t know where to turn.
I have 3 chickens named, K, F and C.

I volunteer for once upon a smile because when I was younger I lost my dad and some years later my brother so I know how it feels to have your world turned upside down with grief so I want to help others who are going through similar.
I work as an early year’s practitioner bank staff member in a nursery and I am currently studying counselling and psychotherapy to become a counsellor
My favourite holiday destination is Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria.
I volunteer at once upon a smile because I am in awe of everything the charity does for bereaved children and families when they are in need, which then made me want to help by volunteering because I get to see the children express and enjoy themselves. .

Expenses: Although the time you offer is donated, we pay out of pocket expenses including travel allowance.
Insurance: Once Upon a Smile provides insurance cover for our volunteers while you carry out your role with our charity. Just complete an application form and provide two references, once completed training will be arranged and an advanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) will be completed.
Induction and Training: We will provide you with training which will take place at our head quarters. This will be discussed during your induction where you will receive a volunteer pack with full details of our policies and procedures.
Supervision/Support: Once Upon a Smile will provide structured supervision whilst volunteering and this will be through team meetings, email and phone.
